Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about physical therapy? You’re not alone. Here are answers to the most common questions we receive from new patients.
What is physical therapy? Physical therapy is a hands-on, non-invasive treatment that helps restore movement, reduce pain, and improve strength and function using targeted exercises, manual techniques, education, and modern tools — without relying on medication or surgery.
What does a physical therapist do? Our licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy evaluate your condition, identify the root cause of your pain or limitation, and create a personalized plan to help you move better and feel better. We combine expert manual therapy with progressive exercises tailored to your goals.
What conditions do you treat? We commonly help with back and neck pain, sports injuries, post-surgery recovery, joint pain (shoulder, knee, hip), headaches, arthritis, balance issues, work-related injuries, and more. [Add your clinic’s specialties here.]
Do I need a doctor’s referral to start physical therapy? In most cases, no. Many states allow direct access, so you can schedule an evaluation without a referral. We’ll let you know if your insurance or specific situation requires one.
What should I expect at my first appointment? Your initial evaluation lasts about 45–60 minutes. We’ll discuss your medical history, current symptoms, goals, and perform a thorough movement assessment. You’ll receive a clear diagnosis of the problem and a customized treatment plan on the same day.
What should I wear to physical therapy? Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement (athletic shorts, t-shirt, sports bra, etc.). We need access to the area being treated, so avoid tight jeans or restrictive clothing. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.
What should I bring to my first visit? Bring your insurance card, photo ID, any relevant medical records or imaging (MRI, X-ray), a list of current medications, and your referral if you have one. Comfortable clothing and water are also helpful.
Is physical therapy painful? Some discomfort can occur as we restore movement, but we never push beyond what you can tolerate. Many patients feel relief right away, and we adjust treatments to keep you comfortable while progressing safely.
How long does each session last? Most follow-up sessions are 45–60 minutes. Your first evaluation may take a bit longer.
How many visits will I need? It varies by condition and your goals. Many patients see noticeable improvement in 4–8 visits, while others benefit from longer programs. We re-evaluate regularly and adjust the plan together.
How soon will I feel better? Many patients report reduced pain and improved movement within the first few sessions. Full recovery depends on your specific issue, consistency with home exercises, and following the plan.
Will I have to do exercises at home? Yes — a short home exercise program is a key part of successful recovery. We keep it simple, effective, and tailored so you can easily fit it into your daily routine.
Do you accept my insurance? We accept most major insurance plans. [List your accepted insurances or say “Contact us and we’ll verify your benefits quickly.”] We also offer self-pay options and payment plans.
How does billing and payment work? We’ll verify your insurance benefits before your first visit and explain any copays, deductibles, or out-of-pocket costs upfront. Transparent pricing is important to us.
Can physical therapy help me avoid surgery? In many cases, yes. Conservative physical therapy is often very effective at reducing pain and restoring function so surgery isn’t needed.
Do you offer telehealth / virtual visits? Yes, we offer virtual physical therapy sessions for evaluations and follow-ups when appropriate.
Will I see the same therapist every visit? We strive for continuity of care so you see the same physical therapist for most visits, building trust and better results.
What if I don’t see improvement? We track your progress closely. If you’re not improving as expected, we’ll adjust your plan or refer you to another specialist if needed.
